Calabria is a stunning land, a pristine region where singular specimens of plants and fruits grow thanks to the climate and soil.
In this land, people have cultivated a unique fruit for centuries: the original Bergamot, also known as the treasure of Calabria.
The essential oil that comes from the peeling process is used in different industries, including beauty and haircare.
Both essential oil and bergamot juice have health benefits.
The benefits of essential oil
Bergamot essential oil has numerous potential benefits. It is frequently used in aromatherapy due to its uplifting, refreshing scent. It is believed to have mood-enhancing properties and can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression.
Bergamot oil, indeed, is thought to stimulate the release of certain neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which can help improve mood and feelings of well-being.
Furthermore bergamot oil is often used in skincare products due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Antioxidant properties of the juice
The Bergamot juice is a good antioxidant with a high concentration of bioflavonoids for anti-inflammatory, vasoprotective, hypolipidemic, and hypoglycemic properties.
Vitamin C in bergamot stimulates the immune system, helping to fight infection and disease.
Furthermore, Bergamot is currently used to prevent and treat various metabolic diseases.
Help against Cholesterol
In particular, some polyphenols in Bergamot juice inhibit the intrahepatic synthesis of triglycerides. They act on the intracellular response to insulin, enhancing its signal and especially cholesterol synthesis.
In reference to the interaction of Bergamot juice and lipid balance, this noble Calabrian citrus fruit is able to inhibit cholesterol by behaving as true statins (“statin-like” – cholesterol synthesis inhibitor drugs).
Bergamot contains important compounds, polyethoxylated flavonoids, which can reduce LDL levels, also known as bad cholesterol, and increase HDL, the good cholesterol levels, thus improving the overall lipid profile.
And this is only one of the best-known benefits of the bergamot fruit!
Cardiovascular Risk Reduction
Lowering cholesterol bergamot may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and coronary heart disease.
Last year, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) demonstrated the efficacy of the bergamot for cholesterol reduction.
The team started a clinical study that involved 50 healthy subjects aged between 18 and 70 with a moderately high blood cholesterol level (between 115 and 190 mg/Dl). Under medical supervision, people receive a treatment based on bergamot extract.
The results were promising because the analyses showed an increase in HDL cholesterol (+5%), a significant reduction in LDL (about -8%) and triglycerides (about -13%), and a hypoglycemic action (about -3.4% of fasting blood sugar).
Here is the complete study.
Protected denomination of origin since 2001
Bergamot is the fruit of Citrus bergamot, a species belonging to the Rutaceae family whose origin is still uncertain. It is a perennial plant, much like the orange, but with a smaller, inedible fruit (hesperidium). From the exocarp comes the essence and the juice.
One single bergamot provides about 42 calories and contains 80% water and an average of 50% of the vitamins in a diet of 2000 kcal per day.
In 2001, by Decree of the European Union, the Protected Denomination of Origin “Bergamot of Reggio Calabria – essential oil” was established. This Decree contains the specifications for the cultivation of the fruit and the processing for essential oil extraction.
You will find the original flavor and healthy characteristics only in bergamot grown in Reggio Calabria. The same with which we make our Pirri Elements products and Pirri Original hair care line.
For the use of pure and genuine Reggio Calabria Bergamot, our Bergamot Juice was recognized as the best Bergamot juice approved by the Reggio Calabria International Bergamot Academy.

How much bergamot juice a day was used in the study?
Maria
Good morning, and thank you for your message! The study does not specify this detail. Anyway it is always good to drink a glass of bergamot juice every morning, even diluted with water.
